Kamera ini terbilang cukup cocok digunakan bagi seorang pemula, yang baru saja menekuni dunia fotografi. Apple Bikin Kamera Berkualitas DSLR

All Review ~ Apple disinyalir tengah mempersiapkan kamera utama pada smartphone-nya dengan kualitas selayaknya kamera ahli DSLR.

Dilansir dari MacRomours, Rabu (18/11/2014), hal ini disampaikan oleh John Gruber melalui The Tech Block. "Tahun depan kamera Apple akan menjadi kamera terbesar," katanya.

Dia menjelaskan, belum diketahui seberapa besar persisnya kamera Apple nantinya. "Aku sudah mendengar bahwa sistem dua lensa yang aneh, di mana kamera belakang menggunakan dua lensa dan entah bagaimana menjadikan gambar hasil berkualitas DSLR," ungkapnya lagi.

Sistem dua lensa yang digabungkan itu terdengar agak mirip dengan kamera Duo Lens, yang diperkenalkan dengan HTC One M8. Dalam One M8, sensor standar dikombinasikan dengan sensor "Ultrapixel", yang memungkinkan lebih banyak cahaya untuk meningkatkan kualitas gambar. 

Lensa sekunder di M8 digunakan untuk memberikan informasi gambar tambahan pada lensa pertama, yang juga memungkinkan fokus akan bergeser.

Apple iPhone telah lama menjadi kamera pilihan yang paling populer di situs berbagi foto Flickr.

Sensor Baru Sony Hasilkan Foto Setara DSLR di Ponsel

All Review - Sony Mobile kembali meluncurkan varian sensor baru untuk perangkat mobile, Exmor RS IMX230. Sensor tersebut diyakini bisa menghadirkan kemampuan foto setara kamera DSLR dalam perangkat-perangkat mobile.

Exmor RS IMX230 menggunakan sensor jenis CMOS yang mengemas resolusi 21 megapiksel ke dalam sensor yang berukuran 1/2,4 inci. Ukuran sensor tersebut sedikit lebih kecil dibanding ukuran sensor yang saat ini dimiliki Xperia Z3, yaitu 1/2,3 inci.

Dikutip dari Engadget, Senin (17/11/2014), fitur unggulan dalam sensor tersebut adalah sistem autofocus phase-detection dengan 192 titik. Sensor tersebut menjadi sensor CMOS pertama dalam smartphone yang mengusung teknologi seperti itu.

Fitur tersebut akan membantu kamera dalam memotret obyek-obyek yang bergerak cepat, sehingga tetap terlihat tajam. Sensor tersebut juga memiliki kemampuan HDR (High Dynamic Range) untuk perekaman foto dan video 4K. 

Dengan demikian, pengguna akan lebih mudah merekam video atau memotret dalam kondisi pencahayaan dengan kontras yang tinggi.

Sensor Exmor RS IMX230 akan mulai tersedia pada April 2015. Kemungkinan besar sensor ini sudah diusung oleh perangkat smartphone unggulan Sony terbaru, Xperia Z4 yang rencananya juga akan diluncurkan sekitar April 2015 di ajang Mobile World Congress 2015.

Selain digunakan untuk produk-produknya sendiri, lini sensor Exmor buatan Sony juga dipakai oleh pabrikan smartphone lain, seperti Apple dengan iPhone 6-nya, Samsung dengan Galaxy Note 4, dan OnePlus One.

Sony juga berencana untuk mengekspansi portofolio sensornya tersebut dengan membuat versi 16 megapiksel, dengan tetap mempertahankan kemampuan autofocus cepat dan HDR-nya. Rencananya, sensor tersebut akan diperkenalkan pada akhir tahun 2015.

2. Multi-function button

Lumix GX1 – a Pretty Impressive Micro Four Thirds Camera for the Traveling Professional

all review--Panasonic's Lumix line of digital cameras are among the best in the world - not only is their TZ/ZS travel series winning most of the awards every year for the past half-decade, but now the GH1 and GH2practically dominate the affordable hybrid still/video cameras market (Canon seems to be holding the high end share, but the GH2 is remarkably close to their top of the line DSLR when it comes to video shooting, at least).

The company's Lumix GF line of cameras is aimed at point and shoot owners who might be tempted to upgrade to something better, but are afraid of all the complexities involved with having a "real" dSLR camera, with the size and control difficulty being one of the main issues. Ironically, the GF1 has gained quite a popularity with the professional crowd instead (not that beginners don't like it - it's pretty successful with them, too), and while they found quite a few drawbacks in the first model, the compact interchangeable lens camera quickly became the favorite for frequent travelers that didn't want to take all their pro gear with them.



Most of them hoped for better professional features in the following models, but that did not happen with the GF2 nor GF3, which are even smaller and simpler (yet still advanced underneath) than the GF1. To address the enthusiast market, Panasonic decided to release the GX1 - a camera aimed squarely at professionals who need an ILC and don't want to lug around their full-sized monster SLRs.

The Lumix GX1 looks quite a lot like the GF series, more specifically the bigger GF1, although it has a few distinguishable features, as well. You'd be hard pressed to differentiate between the two at a first glance if not for the model inscription on the front, although a closer look at the back of the device reveals quite a few changes, the most important one being that the GX1 now has a touch screen and less external buttons for controlling the various functions. The basic layout and control logic is the same as with most other cameras, though, so you won't have any trouble just picking up the camera and starting shooting.

The biggest changes are on the inside, however. The GX1 uses the same 16 megapixels APS-C sensor as its bigger brother, the G3, only here it has a maximum ISO of 12,800 - pretty impressive for a compact camera. Aside from taking some very impressive photos (well, depending on the lens you use), the camera can also shoot HD video in 1920×1080 pixels resolution at 30 FPS. The stereo microphone array is just as good as the one on the GH1/GH2 or any other Lumix camera, for that matter (there is no external mic input, though).

Another new addition specifically to the GX1 is the LVF2 accessory, which has a higher resolution and magnification and also uses a new port for transferring the live feed, making it incompatible with other Lumix cameras or the LVF1 (so you'll have to buy it regardless of whether you already have the first model). The GX1 comes with a 7.3 W/hr battery that should last about 300 shots or 1 hour ofHD video, and with support for SDXC cards, you won't be running out of space anytime soon.

With the GF3 now being impossibly simple for a real professional to use, it is clear that the GX1 is the way to go for enthusiasts who need a real DSLR's features in a compact body for traveling without a huge bag of accessories. ibtimes

Sharp crafts thinnest 12.1MP CMOS camera module for smartphones

Dubbed RJ63YC100, it is a 12.1-Megapixel, 1/3.2-inch CMOS camera module with optical image stabilization featuring a 5.47mm thin profile. The thinnest profile is achieved using Sharp’s proprietary high-density packaging technology.

This new slim form aims at slender designs adopted by mobile devices. The module also attends to the need of embedded cameras for delivering better image quality and camera functionality. The optical image stabilization utilizes a lens-shift system, which controls lens inside the module. 

This camera allows capturing high-quality images even in situations that are prone to causing blurring of images like camera shake and low-light conditions. Cameras Are Small, Quality Is Big


all review--If you’re an electronics fan, you have plenty to be grateful for at this year’s Thanksgiving dinner: The dawn of easy-to-use touch-screen gadgets. A sensible C.E.O. at Hewlett-Packard. Angry Birds.

And if you’re a camera buff, you can give thanks for the arrival of three of the best cameras ever made: the Sony NEX-7, the Samsung NX200 and the Canon S100.
Why are these cameras so spectacular? Because they provide the best possible photos from the smallest possible device. They’re not about goofy gimmicks; they’re about putting bigger image sensors into smaller bodies.
Sony’s year-old NEX series has turned a lot of heads and sold a lot of cameras. The daring concept: Stuff a pro-size sensor (APS-C size, the same thing you’d find in, say, a Canon Rebel) into a camera whose body could fit in a jeans pocket.
Even with the lens on, the result is half the size and weight of a traditional S.L.R., while producing the same stunning photographic results. (The NEX cameras are even smaller than the popular Micro Four Thirds cameras from Panasonic and Olympus — yet the sensor is 60 percent bigger.)
Now, there have always been sacrifices. On all previous NEX models, you lost the built-in flash. You lost the eyepiece viewfinder, too — you had to compose your shot using only the screen. And you lost a good deal of usability; with so little room for physical buttons, the NEX cameras required crushingly inefficient on-screen controls.
“Look, we know it’d be pricey,” moaned the tantalized photographic masses. “But what if we said ‘Price be damned’? Couldn’t you put in a viewfinder, a flash and some physical controls? That’d be the ultimate!”
And lo, Sony went back to the drawing board and came up with the NEX-7, whose arrival in the United States has been delayed by floods in Thailand. (Sony says it’s working around the clock to get the manufacturing up to speed.) It really is shockingly pricey: $1,200 for the body alone, $1,400 with a 3X zoom lens. But for the deep of pocket and the high of passion, it really may be the ultimate.
This camera is gorgeous. Black metal, like something James Bond might carry. Yet here is, yes, a built-in pop-up flash. It won’t exactly illuminate a football stadium, but it’s fine for subjects up to about eight feet away.
More important, there’s now an eyepiece viewfinder. It’s an electronic type — you’re not peering through glass, but rather into a tiny screen — but it’s amazing. It’s the sharpest, clearest electronic viewfinder you’ve ever used. With three times the number of pixels that the usual LCD viewfinders have, looking at it comes breathtakingly close to looking through a pure glass viewfinder. Yet it has all the advantages of electronic; for example, you get to see the effects of your settings changes before you snap.
And yes, there are more physical controls. There are, in fact, three control wheels, ingeniously and conveniently placed, and you can assign useful simultaneous functions to them. For example, in manual mode, one can control aperture, another shutter speed, a third ISO (light sensitivity). Imagine being able to adjust all of those settings on the fly, without having to open a single menu — or even take the camera away from your eye. Fantastic.
There are now nine lenses available for the NEX series: macro, fisheye and telezoom among them. One of them is available only with the NEX-7: a gorgeous, matching, $1,000, nonzooming f/1.8 Zeiss lens. That f/1.8 business means it lets in a lot of light and creates a deliciously blurred background.
The NEX-7 is an astonishing piece of engineering. Its screen tilts up or down for easier angles. It takes magnificent 24-megapixel photos under almost any conditions. It’s infinitely customizable (and a lot to learn).
It also preserves the most frustrating quirk of its NEX siblings: you still can’t change modes, even from Auto to Program, without diving into the on-screen menus. That’s a particularly inefficient if you love to jump in and out of Sony’s amazing Sweep Panorama mode.
Now, the NEX-7 may be the most lusted-after camera of the year, but you can get much of what it offers in less luxurious packages. Take the NEX-5N, for example. For half the price ($700 with 3X lens), this 16-megapixel model shoots the same 10 frames a second (as long as it doesn’t have to refocus) and records the same gorgeous 1080p hi-def video. It has a touch screen but no flash, and a clip-on version of that amazing OLED viewfinder. It, too, is still hobbled by the clumsy mode-switching system, though.
Fortunately, there’s an alternative: The Samsung NX200 ($900 with 3X lens). Like the NEX models, this camera has a pocketable body, yet contains a full APS-C sensor inside; it, too, takes sensational pictures and 1080p videos. But here, the on-screen controls aren’t a liability — they’re the best part. For example, one button press summons the Smart Panel: a grid of 16 setting options that you can change with a quick turn of a dial. Many of the Samsung’s 10 available lenses offer an iFunction button right on the barrel — one press lets you change a setting of your choice, like aperture, shutter speed, exposure adjustment and so on.
The NX200 can shoot 30 pictures a second at 5 megapixels each, or seven photos a second at the camera’s full 20-megapixel resolution. And it offers (hallelujah!) the same sweep-panorama feature that Sony cameras do so beautifully.
Unfortunately, here again there’s no built-in flash or eyepiece viewfinder. (A clip-on flash comes in the box.) And the lenses are big — bigger than Sony’s. In essence, though, you’re getting a package comparable to the Sony NEX-5N, but paying $200 extra for the superior menu system. Think hard about that choice.
The Sony and Samsung cameras are fantastic micro-S.L.R. cameras, but their lenses keep them from being pants-pocketable. So far, physics have rendered it impossible to put a full-size sensor into a coat-pocket camera.
Instead of having a full-size sensor in the smallest possible body, Canon’s new S100 contains the biggest possible sensor in a pocket-size body. Like its amazing predecessors, the S90 and S95, you’d never know that this sleek, black, metal compact is hiding a sensor with 88 percent more area than most pocket cameras’ sensors. And it has an f/2.0 lens, a rarity among pocket cameras, which offers you better low-light shots and, sometimes, that blurry-background effect.
(Unfortunately, you get f/2.0 only at the camera’s impressively wide-angle 24mm position. As you zoom all the way to 5X, you drop to a disappointing f/5.9.)
This camera costs more than double the usual pocket camera price ($430), but its picture quality blows other cameras off the map.
What’s new in the S100? Speed. A new processor that can pop off eight frames in a second or deliver 120-frames-a-second slow-motion movies. A new 14-megapixel sensor that does better in low light. You can now zoom in while you’re shooting video. Since this camera also packs a 5X zoom and captures 1080p video with stereo sound, there are even fewer reasons to own an actual camcorder anymore. More to love: a digital neutral-density filter that cuts down light in superbright scenes; the famous lens ring (controls your choice of setting — exposure, aperture, shutter speed, whatever), and a GPS chip that location-stamps each photo.
As with its predecessors, the painful price you pay for all of this magic (in addition to the steep financial price) is battery life. You get only 200 shots on a charge, which is rock-bottom for cameras. Carry a spare.
But holy cow — what a photographic instrument! What color, clarity, tonal range! There are days when the S100 seems incapable of muffing a shot.
Like the Sony NEX-7, Sony NEX-5N and Samsung NX200, the S100 delivers picture quality that used to require much bigger, bulkier, heavier cameras. Let us give thanks for that.

DSLR camera buying guide


 

For serious and professional photographers, digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras are the way to go. They offer faster performance, more control over settings, and better image quality than even top-of-the-line point-and-shoot cameras. Most importantly, they give you the ability to change lenses.
Thanks to recent innovations, DSLRs are growing in popularity with casual photographers, too. Many DSLRs now feature preset shooting modes, friendly interfaces, helpful guide modes, and more compact designs.
You can find great DSLR cameras for well under $1,000. Still, a DSLR is a considerable investment. How do you choose the right one? We’ve got some tips on shopping for a DSLR if you’re in the market for one this holiday season. And we’ve got a few recommendations for the latest cameras.

Understand the basics

Here are a few key points to consider before shopping for a DSLR:
The megapixel myth: A high megapixel rating doesn’t mean better image quality. However, it does give you more flexibility when cropping or making enlargements. These days most cameras offer a resolution of at least 10 megapixels, which is overkill for most shooters. A 5-megapixel image is enough to make a sharp 8-by-10 print. An 8-megapixel image is enough to make a sharp 11-by-14 print. A 10-megapixel file can produce acceptable prints of up to 13-by-19 inches, though they may lose some detail. Images from a 13-megapixel camera look good at 13-by-19 inches and can be pushed to 16-by-24 inches. Many digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras today exceed 13 megapixels—all the better to creatively zoom in and crop your images. Keep in mind that higher megapixel counts also produce larger files, which in turn take up more space on your camera’s memory card and computer’s hard drive.
Pay attention to sensor size: Cameras with larger sensors and better lenses normally take better shots, regardless of megapixel count. Bigger sensors normally create better images, as do higher-quality lenses; this is why DSLRs take such stunning photos. If you can’t get any hands-on time with a camera before deciding whether to buy it, make sure to check the specs to see its sensor size, and compare it with any other camera you are considering purchasing.
Be practical: DSLR prices range from $500 to well beyond $1,000. If you’re new to DSLRs, look for a camera in the sub-$1,000 range. They’ll have preset shooting modes you can use while you learn how to master the manual settings, and you won’t sacrifice much in terms of image quality. And, if you do decide to upgrade to a more expensive camera body later, you can buy a camera that takes the same lenses and accessories.
Body only: Many DSLRs can be purchased body-only and require that you supply a compatible lens in order to take photos. Others—especially entry-level models—also ship as part of a kit that includes a decent-quality multipurpose lens. Kit lenses tend to be relatively slow, meaning you may have trouble getting sharp action shots in low-light situations without a flash. If you tend to shoot indoors, you may want to consider also investing in a faster lens.
 
Lens selection: If you think you’ll want to use different lenses for different shooting situations (like a zoom lens for distance shots, a macro lens, or even a lens with an effect like fish eye), consider the lens selection for the DSLR before you buy the camera. If the kit lens wouldn’t be of much use to you, it may be more affordable to buy the camera body-only and invest in the lens you really want. Features to consider

Once you’ve settled on the basics like the number of megapixels and the size of the sensor you need, you should have narrowed your search to a more manageable number of cameras. From this point on, you should base your decision on certain features and performance. Here are some important ones to consider.
Image stabilization: Even if you think you have rock-steady hands, it’s easy to end up with blurry photos—particularly in low-light, indoor environments where you don’t want to use a flash (in a church or a museum, for example). In these situations, the shutter has to stay open longer in order to create a good exposure. And the longer it stays open, the more susceptible your image is to the effects of camera shake or subject movement.
To help battle these problems, many camera manufacturers offer cameras and lenses that include image-stabilization technology. But there are different approaches to image stabilization, each with its own unique advantages and disadvantages:
  • Optical Stabilization Used in compact cameras and SLRs, optical stabilization is the most common image-stabilization method. Optical stabilization uses gyroscopes within the camera or the camera’s lens to detect camera shake, and then steadies the path of the image as it makes its way to the camera’s sensor (CCD). In SLRs, the gyroscopes are often located in the lens.
  • Sensor Stabilization This technology works similarly to optical stabilization: With sensor stabilization, gyroscopes located in the camera body, rather than the lens, detect shake and then move the image sensor to counteract the motion. Although it’s available on some point-and-shoots, sensor stabilization is more commonly used in SLRs.
  • Digital Stabilization Unlike optical and sensor stabilization, which actually correct the image while you’re capturing a picture, digital stabilization attempts to make a picture clearer by simply changing the camera’s settings or by altering the image after it has been captured. There are several approaches to digital stabilization. One of the most useful is Intelligent ISO. Used primarily in compact cameras, an Intelligent ISO feature automatically increases the ISO, or light sensitivity, setting when the image sensor detects a moving object. As a result, the camera is able to use a faster shutter speed to snap a picture, thus freezing the motion of the subject and reducing blur. A high ISO can, however, make images more grainy.
Viewfinders: Cameras come with three basics types of viewfinders: Optical viewfinder (OVF), electronic viewfinder (EVF), and an LCD screen with Live View. The first two are both eye-level viewfinders, while the third lets you preview a scene on the camera’s LCD screen. Most current DSLRs have an LCD screen in addition to an eye-level viewfinder. When evaluating a camera, make sure its viewfinder is bright, that you can see from edge to edge, and that the focusing screen is clear.
  • LCD with Live View Live View on an adjustable LCD screen is a great feature for any time when you need to shoot over your head, down low, or in other situations where your camera position makes looking through the viewfinder impossible. If an LCD screen isn’t adjustable, Live View still makes for more relaxed tripod-mounted shooting. Unfortunately, LCD screens can have reflections and glare, making them difficult to see in bright light. Also, during Live View mode on most cameras, the SLR must flip up its mirror. That means the camera loses its autofocus capability. To calculate focus, it has to analyze the image that it’s seeing (Sony’s a55 solved this problem by making a translucent mirror). This takes much longer than normal autofocus, so when working with Live View you’ll need to anticipate your focus concerns and adjust your shooting technique accordingly.
  • Optical Viewfinder Optical viewfinders on DLSRs show exactly what the lens sees, but often with a small amount of cropping around the edges. They are the preferred choice for many pro photographers as they have all the dynamic range of the human eye, and no lag time. They can sometimes feel like you’re looking through a tunnel, though. The optical viewfinders on more expensive (over $1,000) cameras are better quality.
  • Electronic viewfinder Found on many of the compact interchangeable lens cameras, these viewfinders take up less space in a camera which mean a smaller and lighter body. They are projected video feeds, and as such can have low resolutions. They also don’t show you the full dynamic range of the scene, making it harder to make creative decisions about how you want to expose your shot. They also have a slight lag time which can be a deal breaker for sports photographers. What they can do is overlay more information and show a preview of what an image will look like with your chosen aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings.

Flash: When buying a camera, you’ll want to know what type of flash it has and how much control it gives you over flash settings. Some DLSRs have a small built-in flash, some have a hot shoe mount—a bracket that lets you attach an external flash to the camera, and some cameras have both. If a camera has a mount but no flash, check to see if an external flash is included as part of the kit or if you’ll need to buy it separately.
 
A built-in flash is extremely handy to have, but it’s not going to be as high of quality as an external flash. If you plan on using a DLSR camera for casual photography or if traveling light is important to you, a built-in flash will be useful. If you’re an advanced photographer who wants to greatly improve the quality of your flash photography—and aren’t concerned about the heft of the camera—take a hint from the pros and choose a camera with a hot-shoe mount. This way you can attach external flashes, which throw light wider and farther than built-in flashes can, producing more-consistent light. They also raise the flash head above the lens, which helps reduce red-eye. (Forget about using a camera’s red-eye mode for this—it’ll be more annoying than useful.) Some external flashes even have rotating heads that let you bounce the light off of ceilings for a diffused, natural look. Finally, external flashes don’t drain your camera’s batteries, as they run on their own battery source.
Make sure the camera you buy gives you quick access to different flash modes, including On (which forces the flash to fire even if the camera detects enough light—useful for back-lighting situations), Off (to prevent your flash from firing even in low-light situations), and Slow-Sync (which is also sometimes referred to as Nighttime mode). This last mode is particularly useful as it tells your camera to use a slow shutter speed in combination with the flash, thereby preventing background detail from getting washed out. If you don’t find this mode in the Flash settings, take a look at the camera’s preprogammed modes. Some cameras also include a nifty Flash Exposure Lock (FE Lock) feature. This lets you tell the camera what the most important aspect of the scene is and then provides just enough flash to illuminate it.
Autofocus: While shopping you’ll read a lot about different autofocus systems. The most common thing you’ll find is that some systems have more “points” than others. This simply means that they can detect a subject in more parts of the frame. More points are better, but the speed of the autofocus mechanism is equally important. Also, DSLRs don’t have the shutter lag that many point and shoot cameras have. Still, focusing a DSLR requires pressing the shutter button halfway and can take varying amounts of time on different cameras. If you can get a hands-on experience with a DSLR before you buy, check the autofocus speed.
Continuous autofocus is a handy feature if you are photographing moving subjects. Some new DSLRs now offer continuous autofocus while shooting video. This is a great feature, but if you’re shooting without an external microphone, your video might pick up the sounds of the lens refocusing.
Size: A full-size DSLR is larger and heavier than a point-and-shoot camera, so comfort is key. A camera that fits comfortably in one person’s hand may be too large or small in someone else’s. If size and weight are a serious concern, you may want to consider a compact interchangeable lens camera, which have bodies as small as point-and-shoot cameras.
Dust buster: If you think you’ll be changing lenses often, look for a DSLR with an internal sensor cleaner. This helps keep your image sensor much cleaner, and dust free. If you’re using your camera in rugged, outdoor conditions you may still need to manually clean your camera.
File formats: DSLRs support raw file formats, which are un-processed files. Raw files offer the most editing flexibility when you open the photo in an image-editing program. However, if the camera is still relatively new, keep in mind that you may need to wait for editing programs from third-parties, such as Adobe and Apple, to support the camera’s raw format. DSLRs also support the JPEG format, which all image editors can read, no matter what type of camera takes the image. JPEG uses compression to create smaller file sizes that won’t take up as much storage space as raw files, but do not have as good image quality.

Continuous shooting mode: If you take photos of sporting events, kids, or any other fast, unpredictable subject, a continuous-shooting (or burst) mode will make a huge difference in your photography. This mode lets you hold down the shutter button to shoot multiple photos in rapid succession. The number of pictures you can record in one burst is determined by your camera’s electronics—and in some cases by the type of memory card you have. You may need a more high-speed memory card to take advantage of your camera’s fastest shooting rate. If so, be sure to factor that cost into your decision. To be effective, a continuous shooting mode should capture images at least 3 fps (frames per second) or faster at the camera’s highest resolution.
Face Detection: With this mode turned on, your camera locates the people in a shot and then fine-tunes the focus and exposure for those faces. While this may sound like a superficial gimmick, we’ve found that it works surprisingly well—greatly increasing your chances of getting good shots at a wedding or family reunion. Typically, this option is in the camera’s autofocusing (AF) menu. Face detection is particularly handy for candid shots, where you’re working quickly and are thus more vulnerable to misfocused shots. It’s also a boon for flash photography. With face detection turned on, the flash doesn’t try to illuminate the whole room, just the people within range—cutting down on the nuclear blast effect.
Video: Many DLSRs now offer video recording features—often at HD resolution. You’ll have to make some usability compromises that you wouldn’t have to make if you used a camcorder but the video quality is often worth it. And because you can take advantage of a variety of lenses, including fish-eye lenses, you can achieve interesting video effects with an SLR. Remember that video requires a lot of storage space, so plan accordingly.
Storage: If you have an existing storage card that you’d like to use with your new camera, make sure that it’s compatible with your new purchase. Most cameras on the market today use SD (Secure Digital) or SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) format cards. SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards are more expensive, offering storage capacities up to 32GB, but they’re not backward-compatible with standard SD slots. There’s also a new format on the block: SDXC, which supports storage capacities up to a whopping 2TB; those are even more expensive, and they aren’t compatible with all SD/SDHC card slots.
 
In addition to storage capacity, there’s also the speed issue to consider. SD and SDHC cards have a “Decoding Class” rating listed, which refers to the data-writing rate for each card. The higher the Class number, the faster the write speed; if you’re planning on shooting video or using a high-speed burst mode, look for a Class 4 or Class 6 card at the very least.
To complicate matters further, there are a couple of other formats out there. Some cameras support MicroSD or MicroSDHC cards, a smaller version of the SD card format that isn’t compatible with full-size SD slots. Older Sony cameras take MemoryStick cards, and older Olympus cameras use the XD card format; both companies’ new cameras now support SD/SDHC cards. What’s more, many higher-end DSLRs have a larger-format CompactFlash card slot. You’ll want to consider all of these options when purchasing storage for your camera, though it is definitely easiest to go with standard SD/SDHC cards since you will be able to use them across cameras.
Battery life: Cameras use one or more of several types of batteries: AAs, either non-rechargeable alkaline ($5 for four) or rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH, about $14 for four); high-capacity disposable CRV3s (around $10 apiece, and some cameras take two); or proprietary rechargeable batteries that can cost $25 to $65 to replace. Some digital cameras quickly drain batteries—especially alkaline batteries—which can be expensive and annoying. Battery life and cost often aren’t related; some inexpensive cameras have great battery life, and some expensive ones use up a charge quickly. Either way, it’s a very good idea to buy spare batteries.
Menus: When evaluating a camera, consider how easily you can reach common settings—resolution, macro mode, flash, and exposure adjustments—and how easily you can play back just-taken images. Too many buttons, and you waste time trying to figure out which button does what; too many menus, and you waste time digging through them.
 
Compact interchangeable lens cameras: These cameras, sometimes called CILCs, are part of a somewhat new product category that sits between true SLRs and advanced point-and-shoots. The design of these cameras omits an SLR’s mirror chamber and moves the sensor closer to the back of the lens. The lack of a mirror chamber allows for a smaller camera body, while moving the sensor closer to the lens allows for smaller lens design.
All of this means that CILCs and lenses can be made much smaller than those from a traditional SLR, while delivering the image quality of an SLR and the flexibility of using additional lenses. However, this also means they lack an optical view finder. Some cameras in this category offer an electronic viewfinder instead; others—particularly those at the smaller end of the scale—lack even that and rely completely on the LCD for framing shots.

Recommendations

With all of the above factors to consider, its impossible to recommend the best cameras for everyone. Much depends on budget, size, shooting style, and personal preferences. Here are some places to start:
